Abstract
Objective : To evaluate the clinical effect of psychosocial intervention such as family psychoeducation, patient education, and social skills training for schizophrenics and their relatives at the community welfare center. Methods: Eight schizophrenic patients were participated at 18 sessions for symptom and medication management at twice weekly 120 minutes and 15 sessions for social skills training at twice weekly 150 minutes. Fifty two relatives were participated at 6 sessions for family psychoeducation weekly 210 minutes.
Results : The relatives who had received the family psychoeducation reported significant knowledge gains and reductions in their subjective emotional stress and negative feeling toward patients. Schizophrenic patients who had received patient education and social skills training made significant gains in the knowledge of medication and symptoms, social deficits, and assertiveness. Conclusions: The major obstacles conducting psychosocial intervention at the community welfare center compared to hospital are high rate of patients¡¯ drop-out and the lack of personnel resources. Despite of these limitations, the psychosocial intervention, especially family psychoeducation, conducted at the community welfare center could be a alternative solution under the situation of poor resources of community-based rehabilitation in Korea.
